In that sentence, the word "had" is not past. It only has the same form as the simple past. In your sentence, the word "had" has a subjunctive meaning, and as you have noted in your post, this form is also used to refer to the unreal present and future. You will find this form in so-called Type 2 conditional sentences. Here is another example:

If I knew your real name, I wouldn't have to call you "xHealthY".
That basically means that I don't know what your real name is, so I have to call you "xHealthY" (your forum name).

The word "knew" refers to the unreal present in the sentence above. This is what is real: "do not know".

Well, I think these sentences are a little odd, and I don't understand why you used the plural "foods".

Otherwise, the transformation in your first pair of sentences is OK.
I would suggest changing the second sentence in the second pair to this:

We wish we did not have to hide our food from them.

In that sentence, you are once again using the same form as the past tense to talk about the unreal present.

The plural form "foods" does exist, but it is not used anywhere near as often as the word "food".

The singular word "food" is general and refers collectively to the stuff we eat.
The plural form basically has a more specialized use. It can be used to talk about specific types of food.

It's an important skill to have. This is grammatically OK, but the meaning is a little strange. "Reading fairy tales" is not usually considered to be an important skill.

4. A: This soup tastes bland. Where's the salt.
B: If I were you, I wouldn't add (any) salt. Although "I'd not add" is not actually wrong, it would be much more typical to say "I wouldn't add". The addition of the word "any" would be typical in this negative sentence.

Put some pepper in, instead. Don't use a comma.

5. A: I'm going to ask for a raise.
If I were you, ~~I'd not~~ I wouldn't ask for a raise. (See my comment in number 4.)

6. A: Rambo VI is playing at the Cineplex. My daughter loves going to the movies.
