Can "gradually" be an introductory phrase?

Could you please say, can "gradually" play the role of an introductory

phrase at the beginning of a sentence and consequently be separated

from the rest of the sentence with a comma?

"Gradually[,?] the rain ceased."

Thanks in advance.

Yes, it can. The comma is unnecessary for most single-word fronted adverbs.
