Can "extinct" be used in this sentence?

Hi,

Is extinct a correct word to use in a sentence like this?

"Her young hopes are extinct."

I thought that extinct is only used for things like animals and living beings.

I had another question too. Is "young" correct in that sentence? Should it be "youth" or "young"?
