Can the commas be omitted below after
"and so forth," "and so on," "and the like," and "etc." below?

The carpenter’s saw, hammer, level, and so forth, were found in the attic.

The carpenter’s saw, hammer, level, and the like, were found in the attic.

Cats, dogs, parrots, etc., in transit must be confined to cages.
