Is associate a proper word in the context below?

"The differences [between results obtained from various studies] can be associated with the types of study, the number of shift hours or the amount of rest during each shift, or different personal information such as age, gender, etc."

Thanks!

Is this something you are writing yourself? I wonder whether a sentence beginning "The differences can be explained by ..." might be better? You would have to fiddle with the second part too.

Thank you for your reply.

Yes, I've written it myself. What do you exactly mean by "the second part"? Which part do I have to change?

I was thinking about something like this:

The differences in the results can be explained by differences in the types of study, in the number of shift hours or amount of rest during each shift, or in the subjects' age, gender or personal circumstances.
