Hi there,

I've seen this expression several times: "He can be able to do it." Is that allowed in Standard English?

Can is used to express ability and possibility. We can use be able to instead of can

for example

They can finish the work by 5

= They are able to finish the work by 5.

Any child can grow up to be a president.

= Any child is able to grow up to be a president.

It is not possible because in that case you should use "might/may". There are certain situations where "can" and "to be able to" shouldn't be confused.

You would really have to use your imagination to use this in any sensible way.

John was supposed to work on project X next week.
But John has broken his leg and is not able to do it until it has mended which will take 6 weeks.
So he is not able to do it on time?
