It would be argued by some that abroad employment opportunities and an overseas vacation are the sole reason for language acquisition. While the others believe that there are other motives for learning a new language. In my opinion, there are other advantages beyond travel or job prospects.
On the one hand, the language barrier has always been an obstacle for many people, who want to have a holiday in other countries, consequently, being bilingual or multilingual is widely concerned. In addition, globalization makes it crucial for everyone to be able to communicate with their foreign colleagues or clients because of the growth of multinational companies. For instance, the significant competitive advantage of being fluent in two or more languages can be easily seen through a great number of job opportunities or promotion chances in career.
However, I believe there are other reasons for becoming a language learner. Firstly, some people who are fond of the culture of some nations try to learn the language associated with it to deeply understand it. Additionally, some could find the melodic pronunciation attractive such as Thai so they try to get its accent and end up learning it. Finally, the influence of well-known people can be mentioned as one of the reasons. For example, BTS, a music band in Korea, has a huge impact on the entire world through their songs, which makes everyone who admired them be interested in their mother tongue.
In conclusion, it cannot be denied that communication and job opportunities beyond domestic boundaries are the reason why most people learn a new language. However, it seems to me that there are obviously further inspirations, for which people become language learners.
