Can anyone pls edit/polish my Personal Statement? English is not my 1st language. So I need help. I will be very grateful

My interest in Psychiatry did not start during medical school. The limited time in psychiatry rotation did not help me much to know it better. Though, I had decided that the career I would choose should be an intellectual challenge every day for the rest of my life. For this reason, I gave myself a chance to work in different specialties after my internship including Pediatrics, Surgery, Medicine and Psychiatry to have an open mind and then take a decision on my specialization. Though all work experiences were stimulating, the amount of gratification in Psychiatry was highest.

Adding to my above observations, a personal experience gave me a definite direction. My Aunt suffered from post partum depression. She felt worthless, helpless and hopeless. On my intervention she consulted a psychiatrist which resulted in a positive impact. Her depression was partly due to her moving to a new city, her new role as a mother and her prolonged hospitalization due to Abruptio placentae with premature delivery. I noticed how different stressors make a person behave differently and how a patient’s mental illness impacts the whole family. The above experience along with my own observations has prompted me to pursue a career in Psychiatry.

Psychiatry intrigues me with its allure and pragmatism; and allows use of my creativity. During medical school, lectures on psychological insults in childhood and infancy and their effects later in life impressed me. While developing my interviewing and assessment skills, I realized my affinity for listening to people’s stories and learning about their cultural backgrounds. To see patients with mental illness become functional again after appropriate therapy was very gratifying. I had ample opportunities to counsel patients and gain their trust during my rural internship, which was a challenge because adequate realization and importance of psychiatric care is yet to penetrate many rural parts of India. Convincing such patients to continue medications and their families to have patience was a challenge I enjoyed.

Knowing that the fascination for psychiatry is also accompanied by its demanding nature, both emotionally and mentally, I have developed some hobbies to rejuvenate myself. Playing the Harmonium, performing Yoga and spending time with friends and relatives revitalize and reenergize me. Photography is my new hobby and I have a collection of pictures capturing the various moments in my life.

While doing an observership at the ________________-o, I understood the American Healthcare system even better and it also enhanced my knowledge. My supervisors praised me for my diagnostic aptitude and broad knowledge base. My work experience at ______, helped me learn ways to establish strong doctor-patient relationship in psychiatry.

My qualities of compassion, dedication and empathy will help me to treat patients well. I will bring team player skills and passion to your residency program. Each day of my residency, I wish to be intellectually stimulated and challenged, and gain the proficiency that I would need to become an excellent psychiatrist. I am looking for a program which offers a good balance between psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy. I am excited to enter this fascinating profession and hope to make a meaningful contribution to my patients, to my residency program, and to the field of Psychiatry.
