The 1920’s, also known as the roaring twenties was a time of great growth, and prosperity for the United States. America was blossoming into a country with many great new inventions, and it was also full of new, major fads that made big impacts on the youth, and the culture. New art styles were arising, and the rate of architecture, and building was increasing faster than ever before.

The new inventions during the era had a colossal impact on the 1920’s. The major inventions were the car, the radio, the airplane, the band aid, the Q-tip, and the traffic light. The automobile was not a new invention, but Henry Ford revolutionized the process of making the cars by using mass production. This made the car cheap, and efficient to produce, and therefore more accessible. This had a major impact on the economy because it created many new jobs, and the cheaper price prompted consumers to buy. It also lead to the building of hotels, and gas stations because people could now go places they couldn’t go before. The idea of vacations was new, and many people started going to the city, and country sides during the weekend. The car also gave youth’s freedom, and excitement. The concept of dating was conceived during this time, and everyone had more freedom. The car was a revolutionary invention which gave way to a new form of transportation, and it was a strong force in the 1920’s economy. Another major invention which had a huge affect was the invention of the radio. This was ground-breaking because before this time, people never had any connection to the outside world. The radio was cheap, and affordable, and almost every household owned one. The broadcasts on the radio were amazing because for the first time people were exposed to different ideas, and they could hear not only local news, but also world affairs. It provided a source of entertainment, and people of every age loved to listen. The radio was a cheap, convenient way to spread news. Another invention, the airplane had already been created in the 1903 by the Wright brothers, but in the 1920’s, the airplane was used for commercial use by businesses, and it was used in the military. It was also used for air mail which was great because this greatly expedited the mailing process, and now packages could be sent, and arrival the next day. The airplane wasn’t used for flying to destinations but the very wealthy did have access to this feature. The band-aid is another discovery which we still use today. Every time we get a cut, we pull out a band-aid. So this invention was a big step in the sanitizing, and a great medical tool that we still use. The Q-tip was also created then, and we use this little product daily. It is a basic item apart of our daily life, and we depend on it. Finally the traffic light was an innovative idea which we depend on today. With all the crash on the road, the traffic light is a necessary item needed to control traffic. Imagine all the crashes, and how unsafe the roads would be without this simple device. We need the traffic lights to control the cars, and it was a great invention. Many fads were also brought about during this decade.

Fads caught on quickly during the 1920’s, and had an influence on the culture and the youth. Dance marathons, pole sitting, red lipstick and Freudianism were all popular in the twenties. Dance marathons were a huge part of society and everyone was always out dancing. Since music was making a big splash as well, dance styles were based on the music. The Charleston was a popular type of dancing and it involved crazy leg moves. This was influenced by the harem renaissance because it is said to have originated from that time. Many people danced to this and they also danced to the black bottom. The black bottom dance was also very popular and the youth of that time loved it. The fox trot was also a classic dance danced during this time period and it was viewed as an elegant way to dance. The dance marathons were also very popular contests. Pole sitting was a weird fad but it caught on and many people tried it. Red lipstick was worn by the women and it symbolized their freedom and independence. And finally Sigmund Freud's idea that our mental health was affected by subconscious thoughts was a big theory that some people believed. At one point, he even had many followers believing his theory but toward the end there was no proof to prove this idea and he began to lose popularity. Lastly, art and architecture impacted many aspects of life in the 1920’s.

In the 1920, art deco was very popular along with Precisionism and many there was a lot of new construction and architecture. Art deco was a very popular art style and it affects a multitude of things. It influenced art, architecture, jewelry, clothing, industrial design, paintings and interior decorations. The styles popped up everywhere and the Chrysler building and The Empire State building are two of the famous examples of architecture that were inspired by art deco. This style was opulent and used bright colors. The style was opulent because it came after the oppression and bleakness of World War One. Precisionism was popular as well, and many artists were painting with this new style. Precisionism came from Europe and it inspired many American artists. The 1920’s set a record for building and construction. Many commercial buildings popped up due to there being a laissez faire attitude by the president of the twenties. Also many hotels opened up and the construction of infrastructure went up dramatically. This was due to the automobile because now with cars on the roads, new roads and highways had to be created. Bridges were built as well as signal systems to relate the roads. Skyscrapers were also new and people all over the country competed for the tallest buildings.
