Statement of purpose

After twenty months of experience as a research associate at CSIR-NISTADS, one of the India’s leading research institutes. I want to return to academic study and undertake graduate studies in Bioinformatics at the University of______________.

During the final year of Masters, I elected to do the project at NCAP as it has an outstanding infrastructure setup and a stimulating excellent research environment. This enabled me to work with some best minds dedicated to Computer Science research in my country. I gained a lot from this association – in particular, an idea of how rewarding and meaningful a career in research could be. The more tangible benefits have been deeper insights of strategies of Data Mining and application of Perl Programming skills. I am glad to say that the effort paid off in the end and I left NCAP with the decision to gain experience in data mining and advanced information retrieval systems.

After doing post graduation from Banasthali University, I felt I should gain some practical experience working in a research environment to gain the knowledge of what the life of research scientist entails. I have loved every minute of my work: especially the opportunity to participate in cutting-edge projects and discuss ideas with senior researchers. In the course of my work, I published articles in the information sciences journals. Moreover I am using various open source mapping software’s to analyze biographical data. I enjoy handling complex datasets and processing the information/results. My senior colleagues have encouraged my ambition and feel that I have potential for graduate studies.

As you can see from my CV, all my academic and professional experiences have been related with Data mining and data networks and applications. In particular, having worked on these areas, I am aware of vast range of applications in which this discipline plays an important role and the opportunities it presents for multidisciplinary research. For instance, I have worked on Data mining applications in two largely unrelated fields: text mining (publication and patent datasets) and biological data mining (genes and protein sequence databases), an experience that gives me knowledge on suitability of this technique for solution of diverse real world problems. Thus, being aware of its importance in today’s data driven world and the difficult nature of its core scientific problems, data mining and machine learning in an area of research that intrigues me deeply. Thus my research interests are focused in these areas, in topics like develop and adapt machine learning, mining and visualization techniques for analysis of biological datasets, develop interactive softwares for analysis of real world datasets. However these are just preliminary ideas which gives me enough flexibility to select my specific research topic from range of options within these broad spectrum.

My main academic goal in pursuing PhD degree is to gain the abilities needed to allow me to become an international level researcher with highly specialized knowledge and expertise in my research area. I have chosen ______ dept. for my phd studies because, many of the research that is currently being held there is aligned with my scientific interests. In particular, I am strongly motivated by the work of professor ___________ on __________ and prof. _________ work on ____________. I also have an interest in collaborating in __________ project, a remarkable area of study that I find highly appealing personally.

Finally, as you may know, my home country, India, has been struggling with many problems during the last decades, even though with plenty of good, smart and hardworking people. I think that one of the better ways to help to overcome these difficulties is through education, and in particular, high level research and development. To do so, I can think of no better place to go than a country such as United States of America, one of the most technologically advanced societies. Combine that with the possibility to study in the one of the most prestigious university in USA, the best place to work hard to acieve my goals.
