Can anyone help me explain grammar of this sentence?

Dear all,
I am studying English. I use Effortless English system. When I studied lesson “Ms censorship” in Level 3, in the Mini story I found a sentence “They were all filtering the river looking for gold”.
I understood that this sentence means “They were all filtering the river to look for gold”.
But I don’t know why this sentence is “They were all filtering the river looking for gold”.
Especially it used Verb-ing “looking”.
Anyone can help me explain this?
Thanks very much!

They were all filtering the river looking for gold. 'Looking for gold' is a non-finite clause acting as an adverb sentence modifier. 'Filter the river' is a little strange; I think they re filtering the sand: Looking for gold, they were all filtering the river sand.
