In A War Like No Other, Hanson argues that beginning with the Greek phalanx, there emerged a uniquely Western way of conducting battle; stressing order, discipline and close rank fighting in which mutual protection and the ability to operate as a unit superseded individual prowess. While broadly speaking Hanson's thesis may be correct, I argue that natural continuity in evolution of tactics over time and dispersion of tactics (Due to geographic proximity of ally and belligerent factors) make the concept of Western warfare a natural and inevitable extension of the concept of 'a West'.
