Can anyone give me examples for this exercise?

Hello everyone,

I have an exercise and don't know how to proceed. I was wondering if anyone could guide me through it.

Here it is:

Explain the use of:
1. He'd finished
2. He'd been using

Then name and analyse these two verb phrases in terms of meaning, form and pronunciation. Include analysis of their question and negative forms.

Describe how you would convey and check meaning of these two examples.

I realise it's a wad of info but I really don't know how to answer the questions being asked.

Thanks for any morcel of input,
Dianamae

He'd finished: contracted 3rd person singular of past perfect tense (he had finished); tense is generally used to express an action that happened before another expressed past action; had he finished?
