1. keep it secret

2.  keep it a secret

There's not much difference at all. Don't tell anyone verus consider it something that you don't tell anyone. In practice, no difference.

So it's okay to use one or the other in cases like:

Will you keep it secret?   or   Will you keep it a secret?

I'll keep it secret.   or   I'll keep it a secret.
