GENERATIONS TUG-OF-WAR
Living in a society which is constantly evolving makes it difficult for its members to maintain its pace. What is more, there seems to be a clash between the younger and the older generation which leaves us wondering: What is considered acceptable behaviour nowadays? Should we follow the crowd and comply with the established social norms or should we follow our common sense?

On the one hand, There are vast differences between the current and older generations. The problem is they do not come to terms as regards what it means to be respectful. In the first place, older people expect the younger to adhere the formalities of the past, or else they categorise their manners as rude. For example, while the former deems the overuse of mobile phones in public as impolite, the latter would not imagine their lives without them since those devices have become essential. Apparently tolerance, empathy and negotiation seem to be the key to mending this gap.

On the other hand, Have you ever wondered what the world would be like if everybody conforms to what society expects from us? While it cannot be denied that we are part of a society, it has to be acknowledged that becoming part of it should not mean losing our sense of individuality. It is my belief that conforming to expected social norms hinders creativity and enthusiasm. Therefore, in order to be innovative, we should stop paying too much attention to social conventions which do not have a negative impact on others, and start to follow our hunches.

Taking everything into consideration, I believe that acceptance and understanding will bring peace to the two generations. Not to mention the fact that we should never change ourselves to conform to society’s shackles and chains because it is our uniqueness that makes us beautiful. I am convinced that we should all work together. Otherwise, the gap will linger for good.
