Thank you guys !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
here is my essay : I did study at the Sichuan International Studies University for undergraduate in 2008 .With a natural passion for learning new languages, I have learned French, German and Hebrew. I didn't know what good to learn of these languages, purely for fun.
Until in my junior year, I read the American linguist N. Chomsky's thesis "language description of the three models" unintentionally . Chomsky devote to seek Principle of simplicitydescription of language, in order to use the limited approaches to describle endlessly changeable variety of natural language . In his article, he established new concepts of the Form Language and the Formal Synatx . Also established the three models of linguistic description, which describe both natural language and describe a computer programming language. I was captivated by Chomsky's ideas in language studies. I had a feeling this way can find out universal grammer which can use as the theoretical basis for machine translation systems.
Then when I tried to use Chomsky's Phrase structure method to analyze Hebrew, German, and French , It was so useful and powerful that strengthened my belief that this method does work.
However, when I used this Phrase strcture to analyze Chinese ,I almost unable to move.
For example, in Chinese, We say: "????," but actually means "???????." ‘??’ is a NP (Noun Phrase), "??" is also a NP, "?" is VP (Verb phrase). the rule of this two sentences is?S NP + VP?, SSentence . they have the same levels, the same word order, the parts of speech is also same, but they have very different meanings: the first one is a passive sentence and the second one is an active sentence. If you use Phrase structure method that's apparently you can not explain . Those sentences are everywhere in Chinese. Because the Chinese have a different representing method in passive . Sometimes in Chinese active and passive has no significant difference .So you can only disdinguish them through context. In this dilemma, I need to improve Chmosky's Phrase Structure Method in according to the characteristics of Chinese grammar and try to use a new method to describe Chinese.
