.1.1 Research topic
According to the Chinese newspaper, the China Daily, the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area (AMA) is a magnet for Chinese companies, and it reports that the number of Chinese companies operating in The Netherlands is likely to double or triple in the coming years…. Officials quoted in the China Daily article expect that the number of Chinese companies in the AMA will grow 20% this year with the addition of approximately 30 new Chinese companies establishing offices… (Iamsterdam.com)
As Narula and Duning (2000) said, one of the consequences of globalization is the emergence of new players on the international stage. The quote above, from Amsterdam city website called “I Amsterdam”, shows that Chinese organizations are playing a consistently more important role in the region of Amsterdam. It can be seen from previous reports (knowledgeatwharton.com.cn; Otis, 2012), that more Asian companies are having rapid developments in globalization; especially companies from the People’s Republic of China are becoming one of the biggest players around the world (Bellabone and Spigarelli, 2007).
Although the economy of China is developing rapidly, the management skills are still far behind European standards (Bellabone and Spigarelli, 2007). There remain big difference between the Chinese and the Dutch management styles. Due to the different perspectives on management, the collaboration between Chinese and Dutch entrepreneurs does not always run smoothly (Verburg et al., 1999; Li, 1998). Apparently, the main reason for this problematic situation for Chinese companies is, according to He and Liu (2010) that Chinese companies focus more on economic growth and less on systematically developing management skills.
Lockett (1988) identified the low level of professional management skills as one of the biggest problems that Chinese managers and companies are facing. Decades later, Chinese managers are still considered as less professionally focused when compared to European managers. In Li’s (1998) research, for example, Dutch managers in a Chinese subsidiary of a Dutch company described their Chinese colleagues as having a “lack of knowledge of doing modern business”; by modern business they mean the use of non traditional management skills and technology that fit the economy better in order to be more beneficial efficient. So, what challenges are Chinese companies facing when stepping into The Dutch business market? What can Dutch companies expect while cooperating with Chinese organizations?
