Can “alter ego” be considered a phrase?

Hi, I know that “alter ego” would in most situations be referred to as a “term” but I was curious to know if it would be grammatically correct to refer to it as a phrase as well? Similarly, can I refer to the term “spitting image” as a phrase? Thank you so much.

In terms of grammar, both of those are noun phrases.

Noun phrases can function as the subject or object (complement) of a verb, as well be in other roles.
