Can a rugby ball be referred to as "football"

Hi,

There is a picture in Eckersley's Essential English in which a foolball and a rugby ball are shown... and both are referred to as "footballs". Is it still OK to use "a football" for "a rugby ball" nowadays?

Both rugby league and rugby union are also called rugby football, so some people must refer to it as a football, but I would find it an unnecessary confusion when referring to the three 'football' sports (American football, soccer, and rugby) at the same time.
