Can a person feel "dismal"?

I am trying to figure out if I can use dismal in the following way:

My mother pinned roses into my hair, for I am so / for I feel so dismal.
(A day or a season can be dismal, but can a person be so, too?)

I have started translating some German lyric / poetry, and all of a sudden, I am finding that the words that I search for ~ which convey the correct feeling ~ don't seem to be very easy to find without placing several English words together…

Thanks for your time.
