I'd just like to add that 'knickers' is still frequently used in British English to refer to what Americans usually term 'panties' (i.e. women's underwear). It also appears in the British slang expression "Okay, don't get your knickers in a twist!" meaning "Don't get upset over something trivial".

The actor McAvoy said:camp as knickers, with a kind of real guilty pleasure at the end.

What is that mean?
