In my sons homework he is to correct puntuation. I always get confused and end up using too many.

The comma before and is optional, although if you leave it out in one sentence where there are a series of three, then you should leave it out in all such sentences, otherwise it is not uniform. It is a matter of style. BUT, since this is a homework project, it is what the teacher expects from your son's homework that will count. Hope this helps.
