Came Or Was Coming?

I (come) "came" in very late last night and unfortunately the dog (wake) "woke"up and (start) "started" to bark. This (wake) "woke"
my mother who (come) came/ was coming to the top of the stairs and (say) "said" Which one is correct? Came or was coming?

Actually, neither is correct. You need to recast the above sentence to something like: This woke my mother who was sleeping upstairs.

And yes, as Philip said, you can also use the past simple form "came" to describe the order of the events in the past, but using "was coming" would certainly be wrong there.
