Calling the register

What would a student say when a teacher calls the register and says his/her name?
1) Here am I.
2) Here.

here sounds OK to me.. But as a child I always used to say Present . here I am is more natural than Here am I , but both are too long-winded.

0In the US the teacher calls roll. The activity is called roll call as in "I was late for roll call, so I was marked absent".
The only response we ever used was "Here".
