Calling all English teachers. Is or are?

I am pretty good with english and I can usually tell if a sentence is grammatically correct, but sometimes a sentence that is written correctly ends up "sounding" incorrect. Which of these is right? "Falls is often the main cause of hip fractures." OR "Falls are often the main cause of hip fractures."
