Called upon by Verona's husband,

Eventually she is reunited with her husband, but then a pirate crew (unbeknownst to them called upon by Verona's husband, Lord Lucan, in a bid for more power) slays him.

I'd like to know whether "to kill her husband" has been omitted after "called upon."
Thank you in advance for your help.

You may be right, but the writer does not explicitly state the reason they were called upon. The slaying may or may not be the reason. The context should clarify this.
