Top answer

Duels were fought between two people who wanted to settle an argument/feud/disagreement. They would be supported by a friend, who was called a 'Second', who looked after their weapon, would help ensure rules were followed, and assist their friend if injured. And - if the person who was supposed to fight the duel didn't turn up - the Second would have to take their place.
