Can I say,

(i) Ben could not take the ball up from the drain. His hand was too short. A man saw it / saw this situation and tried to help him.

(ii) Ben saw a man. He called / called out (to) the man for help. He managed to get the ball for Ben.

(iii) Ben saw a man. He called the man for help / to help him.
