Call someone by phone



Would it be correct to say "to call someone by phone" to mean "to call someone"? Do you think of the "by phone" as redundant?

No, it wouldn't, by phone is not a redundant addition. Calling someone by phone is more restricted than just calling someone, hence, it has a tighter space for interpretations.

The form in the original text is fine, though less used, at least in conversation, than 'call you on the phone'.

"To call someone" has at least two meanings, doesn't it? One is "to telephone someone," and the other is "to ask someone to come."
