Call on

At one point Witte was so distressed about the way his wife's name was being taken at the
horne of Grand Duke Nicholas Nikolaevich that he called on him to protest.

Does call on him mean that Witte visited the Duke or that he demanded wihtout visitiing?

Top answer

Vladv Witte visited the Duke This. If he called on him, meaning demanded of him, to protest, it would be the Duke who was expected to protest, which is not likely and surely not what is meant; a duke would command, not protest. This "call on", meaning "visit", is not in my modern US active vocabulary at all, but we understand it when we see it.
