Call it quits vs. call it a day

Hi,

This is not the first time your boyfriend has cheated on you. You should call it quits with him and move on.

Can you use "call it a day" instead of "call it quits"?

It seems there are some situations where only one can be used, though. Could someone help me grasp the difference in meaning between the two?

I would appreciate your help.

No, 'call it a day' just refers to that day in all normal usage: to quit working or making whatever effort for the day. 'Call it quits' is to stop an effort (a job or a relationship) permanently. '

If you wish to use the latter for a shorter period, it needs that indication: 'Let's call it quits for the day, shall we?'
