Vocabulary

cafeterial or canteen

Do you call the place where you can have breakfast and lunch and dinner at a school a canteen or cafeterial?
I prefer to call the place where I can eat on my campus a canteen, but an american guy calls it cafeterial instead. I don't know which one is correct.

Note that there is no ' l ' at the end of 'cafeteria'. If you and your friend understand each other, it doesn't matter what you call it. What do the people who work there call it, or the school authorities?

Interesting that google translates ?? as "canteen". I use cafeteria as a place where you get a tray and/or plate and walk along a line selecting food. I would use canteen as a place that I got food from a kiosk and then optionally used the tables.

In ??, We can choose to get a tray or plate to pick food and pay by doing our card and sit there to eat, but we can also order some food and wait the cook to cook then eat there. So it's more like a cafeteria than a canteen. To be honest, I didn't get what a canteen is from your description.

In young adult novels I read, both students and school authorities call it a lunchroom, or sometimes a cafeteria. They wait in a lunch line with a tray to get a hot lunch. It seems pretty much similar to ?? (if you are referring to those in Japan by it) though I don't think they serve breakfast or dinner. However, these schools are junior high or high schools. If you have in mind ?? on college cam

Yes I speak. Connichiwa! But I don't know anything other than Connichiwa and I don't know any characters of Japanese. But the characters used to suggest pronunciation in Japanese look similar to Chinese to some extent.

May I ask if ?? is understandable to Japanese speaker?

I believe that "cafeteria" is universal in American schools below college. A college will often have a its own name for the mess hall.
