Cadfael: Matilda and Empress Maude!
Watched a bit of Cadfael this morning and did me some research in my Collins GEM Dictionary of Biography.
Cadfael is set in the reign of King Stephen of England.
Henry I's daughter, Matilda, was usurped by Stephen I in 1135, there was civil unrest, Stephen was briefly imprisoned in 1141 when Matilda seized power and Stephen was forced to give up the throne in 1151 to Matilda's heir, Henry II.
A fellow poster once played Henry...no I MUSTN'T - he'll scourge me with a chaparral switch, lol!
Who is Maude? :-S
