Hi,

I am preparing for an oral presentation and I was wondering if I could phrase this in a way that doesn't have two by's .

As suggested by a survey done by the Institute of Criminology,...

I will being reading it out so I was worried that it's going to sound unnatural. '...in...by..' sounds lots better. ; )

I don't mind the use of "...by ... by ..." there. However, you could replace the first "by" with the word "in":

As suggested in a survey done by the Institute of Criminology,...

Just wondering. Do people construct their sentences differently if they are writing for an academic oral presentation as opposed to an essay on the same subject?

Yes, in an oral presentation use shorter sentences.

Try saying them outloud. You'll see why.
