Which is correct, "I cut vegetables by a knife." or "I cut vegetables with a knife." ?
Could you highlight the difference between "by" and "with" ?

As far as I can think, "by" is always wrong in any active phrase "verb with/by a noun" that describes the tool or implement with which someone does something. ("by" can have other meanings in this pattern of course, as in "I live by a lake" or "I stand by my decision".)
