Hello
There is a phrase "by the hour" which according to the Dictionary means "from hour to hour"
But in the novel "Listening for lions" by "Gloria Whelan" I cannot make it out how it can mean from hour to hour:
"Pritchard herself had altered the clothes to fit me, sitting by the
hour, tears dropping onto the silks and linens as she took in seams and
shortened hems. Seeing her unhappiness, my dislike began to melt away."
i feel it means she spent an hour doing the clothes but the Dictionary does not confirm this.
Thanks in advance
