By the approach

Hello.

I was sitting at the bar when this guy suddenly came up and started talking to me. I was very surprised by the approach, because normally guys that handsome don't lay eyes on me.

Can I say 'the approach' as well as 'his approach'?

And is the rest of the sentence grammatically correct?
