By skates?

Hi. Please help. Do we have to make the words or phrases like "skates" or "inline skates" when using either of them as a mode of transportation in the following example sentence below? Or should either be in the singular?

He went there by skates/ by inline skates.

'By' does not sound natural here. Say eg He went there on skates. eg He went there on inline skates.
