I understand your question- you are not interested in the syndrome, just the phrase "by proxy". When, in fact it's more of an answer of "how"? By "proxy". Like: The couple got married by proxy. OR: The couple got married by "having a stand in". Hope that helps! I had a hard time with this also!!
