By phone / Over the phone

Hi

Is it right to say - "I'll ask my friend by phone."?

Or should it be "over the phone"?

Or something else?

Please help

Thank you

writingtosms Or should it be "over the phone"? That's a little better than 'by phone'. I expect to hear this from a native speaker: I'll call my friend and ask him/her.
