By my faith...

Robin Hood (after he puts a deer on the prince's table):
With the compliments (King Richard says Hello?) of your royal brother King Richard! God bless him!
Prince John: By my faith, (He thinks?)but you're a bold rascal.
Robin, I like you.
Robin Hood: I don't think Gisbourne shares
that sentiment, however. He does look sour. What's the matter, Gisbourne?
Run out of hangings? Gallows are not enough or people?

Gisbourne: I know a ripe (relevant?)subject for one.
Robin Hood: I hope my lady had a pleasant journey
from London?
Lady Marian: What you hope can hardly be important.
Robin Hood: What a pity her manners
don't match her looks, Your Highness.
Prince John: You hear that, gentlemen? Here's Gisbourne so in love with Marian
he daren't say "boo" to her... and this saucy fellow
gives her better than she sends. Shuts her mouth?

ferdisRobin addresses Marian more courteously than what he gets in return from her. Marian is rude to Robin, but Robin is not rude to Marian.
Are you sure he's not rude? That was an undoubted imply she's not
as polite as she should be for a lady.

Robin Hood: I hope my lady had a pleasant journey from London?

This is courteous.

Lady Marian: What you hope can hardly be important.

This is a rather rude reply to such a courteous question

Ahhh... yes, of course. I agree; that's a much better interpretation.

This exchange reminds me of the expression "give as good as one gets," which according to this online slang dictionary didn't receive that precise wording until 1952.
