By car

1. "I went to work by car"
2. "I got there by bus"

Hi, my question is...why don't the car/bus take an a or the in the sentence? Or was the "by taking a car/bus" simply shortened to "by car/bus"?

Thank you

By car, by bus (simply shortened, as you suggest). To be more specific, you could say 'on the #13 bus' - 'in my car'.
