By & At

1."We stopped by the bakery"

2. "He came by the house"

Can at be used to replace by in both sentences? And would there be a difference in meaning then?

Thank you

We stopped at the bakery. Its ok, but a small difference in meaning. stopped by the bakery means we specifically stopped and entered the bakery to buy something.

  • We stopped at the bakery.
  • Its ok, but a small difference in meaning.
  • stopped by the bakery means we specifically stopped and entered the bakery to buy something.
  • (or stopped beside the bakery, however, this meaning is less used with this sentence structure) We stopped at the bakery: could mean the same as stopped by, but has a meaning of stopping in the vicinity of the of the bakery.
  • (more common using stopped by someplace for the meaning of buying things, paying bills, or doing anything specific in that building or place) He came by the house.
