Buy words by the yard??

Hello,

This is from a girl's thoughts about her dad, while he was driving away after he dropped her off. He is a screen writer and she thinks that business is taking all the time and energy he has.

"...and then he was gone: swalloved back into an interior world, at the mercy of people who bought words by the yard and never knew what they wanted until it was already in syndication."

I couldn't think of what that might mean. So I need some help.

Thanks,

Dilan.

'Buy words by the yard' = pay for writings (articles, essay, screenplays, etc) at a rate per word or per page. The suggestion is that her father's employers do not care very much about the content or the quality of the writing.
