Butter knife

Twice in the last couple weeks I've heard butter knife used on tv. Tonight on George Lopez he said, as he lifted his shirt, "Do you want to see how much damage a butter knife can do if there's enough hate behind it?"
What do they mean by butter knife? The ones with the short blade that is at an obtuse angle to the handle?
Or the ones that come with forks and spoons in a set of silverware that aren't nearly as sharp as steak knives with serrated teeth, or paring knives with steel blades that aren't silver plated? That's what we called a butter knife, but I thought no one else did.

  • [/nq] A butter knife is a short knife with a rounded tip, no sharpness to the edge, and most (but not all) have a bend between the handle and the blade that makes one extremely difficult to manipulate by a left-hander.

For me too, a butter-knife is a small blunt thing which lives with the butter-dish. (The one I never use has a decoratively-shaped brass blade with worn-out silver plating

Oh, yes. Yes, yes, yes. The knife that's used to spread chocolate icing on a cake is most definitely lickable. That was always the best part of it when my mother made cake

I eat my peas with honey
I've done it all my life
It makes them taste quite funny
But it keeps them on the knife

Ah, ok, I see what you mean. That's done in the kitchen, so other rules apply than at the table.

Found a picture of the knife in question; this limited edition model in the picture has Becker's name on it.
