"We weren't rich, but/only comfortable." Are "but" and "only" interchangeable there?

I get this feeling from them:

We weren't rich, but (we were) comfortable.

Quite a positive remark.

We weren't rich, only comfortable.

Less positive.

I may be wrong in my feelings.
