But—comma

Hello,

I have a problem with this sentence: "Selena is a talented singer but not a songwriter yet."

In this sentence, there shouldn't be a comma before 'but', right?

Thank you for any help!

Chalktower In this sentence, there shouldn't be a comma before 'but', right? Right, because the part after 'but' isn't a complete clause. For one thing, it doesn't have a subject.

Right, because the part after 'but' isn't a complete clause. For one thing, it doesn't have a subject. If you have a subject and verb, i.e., if you have a full clause, you use a comma:

Selena is a talented singer, but she is not a songwriter yet.

Right, but the "yet" comes as an unwanted surprise. One fix is "Selena is a talented singer but is not yet a songwriter."
