But it's too expensive

Example: I want to buy the new jacket, but it is too expensive. In this example, there are two independent clauses:

Please explain the use of "but" in "but it is too expensive"

I read that but is used for contrast. I don't understand that definition in the above example.

I want to buy the new jacket, and I'll get it tomorrow. (no contrast - yes, action agrees with yes)
I want to buy the new jacket, but I won't because it is too expensive. (contrast - yes, but no)
