'but' in parenthesis

My friend and I were arguing about whether his sentence was grammatically correct. Here is the sentence.

"Dude, this forum is only for thank-yous and apologies. (But you're allowed to apologize for failing to use proper punctuation if you wish.)"

I thought it should be written as "Dude, this forum is only for thank-yous and apologies (but you're allowed to apologize for failing to use proper punctuation if you wish.)"
