But I haven't

Hi

A certain story was written in the past simple tense, but at one point the character says: I should have got used to it long ago, but I haven't.

Is the present perfect tense OK here?

It would be helpful if you could send a little more of the story--maybe one or two sentences before and after the one you submitted.

Hi

The weather outside was very bad, it was freezing cold and the wind was blowing. I should have got used to it long ago, but I haven't. I came closer to the window and had a look at the street below - it was empty.
